State House: Democratic majority
Governor: Michelle Lujan Grisham (D)
Attorney General: Raúl Torrez (D)

Legislative Activity:

HB 182 (Signed into Law): Prohibits the publication of materially deceptive media generated with artificial intelligence that is intended to alter voting behaviors 90 days prior to an election unless it includes a disclosure that the media has been manipulated. Democrat-only bill introduced by Rep. Gail Chasey [D] and Sen. Katy Duhigg [D] in Jan. 2024, passed both chambers along partisan lines, and signed into law on March 5, 2024.

HB 245: Enacting the employee free speech act; protecting employee free speech from captive audience speeches. Introduced in January 2023 but did not progress.

Legal Actions:

AG Raúl Torrez Announces Launch Of Internet Safety Webpage. On July 19, 2024, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez announced the launch of the New Mexico Department of Justice’s Internet Safety webpage. The page features an “experience form” where parents and teens can share their past or current issues with social media platforms. These submitted experiences will help inform a broader campaign set to be announced later this summer. The New Mexico Department of Justice claims that the Internet Safety page serves as a supplemental resource for parents and teens via its extensive resources, including social media privacy guides and information on “Take It Down,” a free service to stop the online sharing of explicit images or videos of minors.
