Misinformation Fingerprints

NewsGuard claims that their “global team of information reliability analysts maintains the internet’s most complete, continuously updated, machine-readable feed of data about false claims circulating online… our AI-powered monitoring and detection systems enable our team to identify potentially false claims in near real-time, providing an early warning and initial claim-tracking data to clients.”

NewsGuard staff then “provide a definitive analysis of each claim with detailed evidence backing up any determination that a claim is false – along with human-verified URLs, keywords, search terms, social posts, multimedia assets, and language excerpts associated with the claim.”

This product was pitched as useful for “AI tools, technology platforms to detect content that may violate their policies against harmful misinformation, trust & safety teams to understand mis- and disinformation risks, and track emerging narratives before they enter the mainstream, and by analysts tasked with defending against information operations from malign actors.”

Commentary:
The U.S. military helped fund the development of NewsGuard's product "Misinformation fingerprints," one of the major online censorship tools developed during the Covid period, which was targeted towards U.S. citizens.
