Federal Award Identifier:

NSF Convergence Accelerator Track F: This project “is developing a dynamic digital dashboard to assist journalists in identifying trending misinformation on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok using advanced computational methods, such as linguistic and visual feature detection and network analysis.”

This tool is intended to “enable journalists to strategically correct misinformation through A/B-tested strategies, like observational correction, and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in real time.”

“In Phase II, the project will collaborate with news and fact-checking organizations to test and refine the dashboard, with the goal of scaling its use to public health organizations, election officials, and commercial outlets to reduce the spread of misinformation.”

Commentary:
While many of these 'anti-MDM' programs are somewhat vague, this grant explicitly describes the goal of controlling information on popular social media sites. It includes the laughable goal of allowing journalists and public health officials to 'correct misinformation,' as if they have a great track record of honesty and accuracy. The program was eventually renamed "Chime In." This award was terminated or ended early on August 31, 2024.
