Tracking and Unpacking Rumor Permutations to Understand Collective Sensemaking Online

CHS: Small: This project “explores how online rumors evolve and spread, aiming to understand their permutations and branching over time. Researchers seek to adapt offline theories of rumor spread to online environments, focusing on how technological and behavioral factors influence information flow during crises.

By developing new methods to track and analyze rumor dynamics, the project aims to improve crisis communication strategies and provide insights into collective sensemaking, ultimately transforming approaches to studying online behaviors during disasters.”

Commentary:
Starting in 2017, this was one of the earlier NSF grants to the notorious Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington to track internet communications. This work laid the foundation for a lot of future grants for similar work at the Universities of Washington, Stanford, and beyond.
