gut.org gAG, the Berlin-based parent company behind betterplace.org, positions itself as a platform-building entity that develops digital infrastructures for civil society. Its relevant activity consists of two Demokratie leben! Program Area I (Strengthening Online Engagement – Against Hate on the Internet) projects. The first, Zivilgesellschaftliche Vernetzungsstelle gegen Hate Speech und für positive Meinungskultur im Netz (Civil society networking center against hate speech, and for a positive culture of opinion on the internet), funded across three grants beginning in 2017, supported a civil-society coordination hub aimed at countering alleged hate speech and improving online discourse. A further three grants supported Innovationsfonds für digitale Modellprojekte für die Demokratieförderung (Innovation fund for digital model projects promoting democracy), funds aligned with federal priorities in preventing alleged conspiracy theories, online hate and disinformation.
