Created in 1971 by physicist-philanthropist Georg Zundel, the Berghof Foundation built its reputation on cease-fire facilitation. Since 2017 its Global Learning unit has added a media-literacy lane. Streitkultur 3.0 (2017-19), financed by the federal Demokratie Leben! program and the bpb, produced classroom modules and a youth-council app on fake news and online hate. The same ministry now backs #vrschwrng: an Interactive Toolkit against Conspiracy Theories, allocating roughly €1 million over 2020-24 to deliver five thematic units on narratives, social-media spread and democratic counter-action. Digital.Truth (Mar 2023–Dec 2024) trains 800 parents, 200 teachers and 20 youth facilitators in rumor-busting workshops across Germany. A shorter pilot, DesINFORMIERT! (09/2024-12/2024), uses TikTok clips to raise political literacy and is underwritten by the Mercedes-Benz. Beyond Germany, Berghof coordinated the €3 million Horizon-2020 project PAVE (2020-23) on extremist narratives in the Balkans and MENA.

Commentary:
Berghof’s entry into conspiracy-literacy work reframes education and peace as cognitive hygiene. Toolkits and TikTok explainers shift attention from political grievances around inequality and foreign policy to the presumed gullibility of youth and parents. Because nearly all financing comes from federal, Demokratie Leben! or corporate social responsibility budgets, threat definitions track official headaches: right-wing populism and so forth. But its standards are absurd. For instance, among the examples its #vrschwrng Interactive Toolkit against Conspiracy Theories gives for anti-semitism are simple mentions of "globalists" and "criticism of Israel"; another module offers "showing a video" of a "demonstration against coronavirus measures" as an example calling for correction. Meanwhile, platform design, belligerent state-administered misinformation or indeed official criminality and corruption go unmentioned. A TikTok project, funded by a luxury-car brand eager to polish its ESG credentials, illustrates the merging of corporate image management with civic pedagogy. Berghof’s conflict-resolution pedigree lends moral authority, but its media-literacy curriculum is heavy on paternalism and often rallies to the defense of an indefensible status quo.
