The Institute of Communication Science (IfK) at Münster leads the BMBF-funded project HybriD – Real-Time Detection of Disinformation Campaigns in Online Media. Worth €2.24 million over three years, the consortium – IfK, Münster’s Institute for Business Information Systems, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Berlin analytics firm complexium – receives nearly €2 million from the ministry’s “Agile Research” line on digital disinformation. HybriD pairs large-scale machine parsing of social-platform data with human coding to flag “hybrid” propaganda that blends bots, sock-puppets and coordinated influencers. IfK’s sub-team, headed by Thorsten Quandt, studies the life cycle of such campaigns and distils pattern archetypes for a live dashboard that, in theory, can warn journalists and authorities while regular news flows continue unimpeded.

Commentary:
HybriD incarnates Germany’s current faith in technical sentinels. An algorithm patrols the timeline, research assistants label the anomalies and a dashboard flashes red when patterns match the archive. The scheme promises speed. A press release stresses that "normal" news will stay untouched, but once a warning light blinks, pressure would surely mount to throttle distribution first, verify later. Funding from the Education Ministry guarantees access to data, but also tugs the project toward official piety: sharper questions about government spin do not appear on the work-plan. HybriD may indeed spot bot salvos faster than today’s newsroom interns, but the machine will not explain why online phantoms often appear more credible than the talking points rehearsed by ministers and experts.
